A 15-year-old girl was set on fire by a fellow student at Evan Hardy Collegiate in Saskatoon on Thursday, police said.
“The suspect we have in custody started the other victim on fire,” Saskatoon Police Service Sgt. Ken Kane told reporters during a news conference Thursday afternoon.
The event happened at about noon on Thursday.
According to Kane, teachers helped put out the fire. The 15-year-old victim was taken to the hospital. She sustained what are thought to be significant injuries. One teacher was also transported to the hospital.
Kane stated that the victim’s parents were with her, but there was no update on her condition.
Following the altercation, a 14-year-old female suspect was detained right away by a school resource officer (SRO) who was already on the scene for another matter. Kane reported that additional police, fire, and ambulance crews arrived shortly after.
SROs will continue to collaborate closely with school board officials as the investigation progresses.
According to Kane, the suspect is still in jail, and it is unknown whether charges will be filed or when.
“This investigation is very early and ongoing,” he told reporters.
He stated that police are cooperating with the school division to share information and “ensure staff and students are cared for.”
Kane stated that it has also been challenging for the officer and those who reacted.
“The mood in our office is quite low,” he told me. “This is not something we ever expected.”
On Thursday afternoon, Evan Hardy Collegiate notified parents that there would be no class on Friday and that a football game had been canceled. Students will be able to pick up their belongings, and administrators want to start regular classes as soon as feasible, according to the letter.
“At school, we will continue to offer a secure, caring, and compassionate learning environment. When school begins, we will try to stick to our regular schedules and routines as much as possible to feel safe, secure, and comfortable. We will also provide more counseling support at the school to meet the requirements of our pupils,” the statement stated.
