20-Year-Old South Carolina Man Killed in Early Morning Crash, Coroner Confirms

The Saluda County Coroner’s Office says a 20-year-old man died in an accident early Sunday morning.

The coroner’s office said in a news release that Jeffrey G. Cook Jr., 20, from Aiken, died at the scene of the accident.

The press statement says the single-car accident happened around 3:40 a.m.

The coroner’s office said Cook was driving a GMC pickup truck near where Neighbors Road and Old Charleston Road meet in the Ward area. The pickup truck went off the road and into a ditch and a slope, the report said.

There were no other injuries recorded.

No one knew if Cook had a seat belt on or not.

It was not known what caused the pickup to go off the road, but the South Carolina Highway Patrol and coroner’s office are still looking into the accident.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety says that as of October 27, 2024, at least 806 people had died on the state’s roads. DPS said that 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina last year.

DPS records show that at least five people have died in crashes in Saluda County in 2024.
