Bay City River Roar will happen in 2016
If you haven’t already heard the roar will happen this summer on the Saginaw River. The 28 year old tradition has been brought back to life.
BAY CITY (WJRT) — (01/13/16) — Late last year, it looked like Bay City’s River Roar was coming to an end.
Bad weather for last June’s event was costly, sponsorships were down and the non-profit organization that put on the races was out of money.
Two months later, organizers say enough funds have been raised to stage the event for the twenty-ninth consecutive year.
It seems once the news got out that the race event was in trouble, a lot of people realized it was worth saving.
“It puts Bay City on the map,” said Wayne Maier, of Maier and Associates.
For thousands of people, the place to be on the last weekend of June has been Bay City for the River Roar races, but rough weather last June hurt the event, sponsorships have been down and it looked like the races, which are free to the public, would be no more.
“We needed 50 to $60,000,” said Chad Cunningham, River Roar board member.
“It was a sad thing to see happen. They went through all their reserves. It just didn’t look like things were going to materialize,” Maier said.
