52-Year-Old Man Arrested for Starting Fires Along I-5 South of Eugene

According to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, a 52-year-old man was detained on Saturday after reportedly igniting fires along Interstate 5 in Goshen.

The individual is charged with five counts of first-degree arson, five counts of reckless burning, five counts of reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct in the second degree, and resisting arrest.

Dispatch got a report of the event at 1 p.m. After Oregon State Police deputies arrived, they saw the man aggressively starting a fire on the shoulder of Franklin Boulevard. When reached, he resisted arrest, according to officials.

Some small fires were recorded in the neighborhood Saturday afternoon, consuming around half an acre before being extinguished by firefighters.

Police added that throughout their investigation, they discovered that the individual also set fire to Franklin Boulevard at Seavey Loop Road on August 26. He was charged with first-degree arson in connection with the incident, according to a news release.
