Much cooler, chilly air will come in behind the cold front that brought rain all day Thursday.
The National Weather Service in Mobile has issued a cold weather advisory. It will start at midnight tonight and end at 8 a.m. Friday.
A “Cold Weather Advisory” is a new product from the NWS for this year. It takes the place of the “hard freeze” and “wind chill” advisories.
The wind chill could reach as low as 15 degrees, which means it will be very cold.
People and animals that are exposed to wind chills below 25 degrees for a long time can be hurt.
Parts of south-central and southwest Alabama, northwest Florida, and southeast Mississippi are covered by this warning.
Be careful when you’re outside, and make sure you have the right clothes, a hat, and gloves on. As much as possible, stay inside and avoid being outside.
Don’t forget the four P’s. People, pets, pipes, and plants. As much as possible, keep your pets inside. Make sure to check on older family members, friends, and coworkers often. Don’t turn off faucets tonight; this will keep lines from freezing and breaking. Also, air temperatures below 30 degrees will hurt plants and crops that are easily hurt, so it’s best to cover plants outside or bring growing plants inside.
It will also be cold on Friday afternoon; the high will be in the low 50s. It will feel like the wind is blowing 40 degrees.
