Alabama, Georgia to Tennessee: Winter Storm Promises Icy Roads and Heavy Snowfall

Oklahoma

On Thursday, light to moderate snow is forecast over the state. It is predicted snow to start south of Oklahoma City and travel north. Snow will decrease overnight Thursday into Friday, with some locations seeing blowing and drifting.

Arkansas

In Little Rock, it is reported that snow will intensify across the state on Thursday. Central and Northern Arkansas may receive 5–9 inches of snow overnight Thursday into Friday, with some places seeing up to a foot. Low moisture will reduce snowfall in northern Arkansas to 1–3 inches.

The station predicts freezing rain and snow in southern Arkansas, with ice accumulations up to a quarter inch. Ice accumulation might damage trees and electrical lines. The station predicted 2 to 4 inches of snow in most places and 5 to 7 inches in the south.

Tennessee

It is reported in Knoxville that the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency has declared a state of emergency ahead of significant snowfall. Snow is forecast to start late Friday morning and intensify between 3 and 11 p.m. The station predicted 2–4 inches of snow in Eastern Tennessee, with some locations seeing 6 inches.

The Smoky Mountains’ highest summits could receive 6–8 inches of snow, affecting weekend travel across the region.

Alabama

A Gulf Low will hit Alabama on Thursday night and last until Friday night. Some regions of Alabama may receive a snowstorm warning on Friday night and a weather alert from Thursday to Friday night.

Due to the low and cold temperatures, Friday will bring freezing rain, sleet, and snow.

The station predicted ice and snow around Birmingham and 2–5 inches of snow along and north of 1-20. Friday night to Saturday travel is discouraged.

Louisiana

It is predicted that a mix of winter weather in the north for the next two days. On Thursday, most impacted locations will get rain before Friday’s snow and sleet.

The station reported a small risk of freezing rain. Between I-20 and I-30, buildup is most likely. Ice will likely be less than 1/10” in most places. In the worst situation, 10% greater ice buildup is possible.

Georgia

Northern Central Savannah River Area would receive a winter storm watch from Friday to Saturday, with I-20 witnessing the most significant weather. Fri.’s weather forecast predicts wintery rain and sleet. Winter is 80% likely here.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp closed some state offices on Friday, while Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens closed all city offices and had staff work remotely.

North of I-20, residents could experience 1.5 inches of snow, while the central CSRA will have a 40% chance of snow and ice. Snow and ice are forecast to be minimal south of I-20.

South Carolina

Inland areas are more likely to be affected, but not by snow. Recent cold weather has prepared parts of South Carolina for freezing rain. A wintery mix is possible as rain comes in on Friday and overnight lows in the mid-20s settle in. Statewide temperatures are anticipated to remain around 10 degrees below average.
