Race Day Live Mississippi is facing a second wave of flu this season. The flu rate across the state has now reached its highest point yet.
According to the latest update from the Mississippi Health Department, for the week ending January 25, more than 1,100 patients in about 70 doctors’ offices reported flu-like symptoms.
This brings the flu rate to 8.7%, which is almost one percentage point higher than the rate seen at the end of 2024.
While flu cases dropped during the first two weeks of January, which made it seem like the flu season had reached its peak, things have taken a turn.
Over the last two weeks, flu cases have been rising again, and Mississippi has now returned to the second-highest level on the CDC’s flu map.
Although the overall numbers have gone up, there’s some good news. In certain areas, fewer cases are being reported.
For example, in the district covering Attala and Holmes counties, the flu rate is still the highest in the state at 24%. However, this is a drop from the previous week’s 37%.
Similarly, in the district that includes Leake and Neshoba counties, the flu rate has decreased from around 10% to about 7%.
