Former Doctor in Trussville Who Tried to Have Sex With a 17-year-old Patient Was Given Three Years in Prison

BLOUNT COUNTY, Alabama — A doctor from Trussville could be sent back to another country after pleading guilty to trying to have sex with a 17-year-old patient two years ago.

There were three charges against Janaki Earla on Friday. She admitted to having lewd material with pictures of children younger than 17 and one count of first-degree human trafficking. The Alabama Medical Licensure Commission has taken away Earla’s license to practice medicine. He used to be an internist at Wellness Medical Center in Trussville and is 60 years old.

Earla was caught at the Days Inn hotel in Oneonta on October 11, 2022, where he was going to have sex with a 17-year-old person. The victim did tell the cops about Earla’s plans, though, and they set up a sting operation at the motel to catch him. Earla is said to have been carrying drinks and condoms with him when he told the victim that he wanted to be her “sugar daddy.”

In exchange for his guilty plea, Earla was given 15 years in jail. He will only go to jail for three years and then be on controlled probation for three years. If Earla breaks the rules of his probation, he will have to return to jail to finish his sentence.

Scott Gilliland, an assistant district attorney, said that Earla’s immigration lawyer told him that he would be deported and sent back to India after his jail sentence was over.
