30 Injured in Arizona Building Collision After Alleged Drunk Driving Incident

Arizona police estimate that 30 people were hurt when a 73-year-old man drove into the building of the lodge he was attempting to depart.

Thomas Edward Kain, 73, was arrested after the truck crashed into the Elks Lodge building in Apache Junction on Saturday night, authorities said. Police stated alcohol “was a contributing factor,” but didn’t elaborate.

“This accident demonstrates how dangerous it is to drink and drive,” Apache Junction police added. “Alcohol impairs your ability to drive safely by reducing your reaction time and decision-making skills.”

There were no deaths reported, although authorities did report several injuries of different severity. At least ten persons were transported to nearby hospitals.

One individual was in critical but stable condition.

According to authorities, fifteen people were treated on the spot for minor injuries, while five others went to hospitals.

According to jail records, Kain was in detention in Pinal County. He did not immediately return a phone call, and court records were unavailable online on Sunday.

“We want everyone to remember that drunk driving can have serious consequences, not just for the driver but for everyone around them,” the city’s spokesperson stated.

The Elks Lodge posted on Facebook that it was thinking of everyone hurt and their families. It also provided the number to a crisis help hotline for anyone in need.

“In response to the unfortunate incident at the Apache Junction Elks Lodge last night, we want to express our heartfelt sympathy and support for all those impacted,” according to the statement.
