Massachusetts Hit by Strong Storms: Downed Trees, Property Damage Reported

On Sunday, a line of strong storms moved through Massachusetts. Until late that night, severe thunderstorm warnings were in effect, and many trees were cut down in places like Beverly.

Beverly police said that bad weather, like heavy rain and high winds, had knocked down a lot of trees, which were blocking roads and other parts of the community in the Montserrat area of the city.

Police in Beverly also said that the MBTA Commuter Rail might be late because trees are growing over the tracks.

Just after 9 p.m., the MBTA said that travelers on the Newburyport/Rockport Line were facing major delays in both directions because of several downed trees on the right of way between Beverly and Gloucester. They also said that trains had to run more slowly through the affected areas.

The MBTA said that Rockport Line train 5078 had to stop at Manchester because of several downed trees in the right of way. Passengers were taken care of by a shuttle bus so that service could continue coming in.

People in Beverly were told to be careful when they were driving, and police said that anyone who lost power should call their electric service provider.

Investigators say that no one was hurt, but they also say that a lot of property was damaged.

In Needham, police said that officers jumped into action right away to make roads safe and easy to drive on.

Also, the police warned people not to try to drive through wet roads. There is a chance of harm, and the risk is not worth it. Don’t drown, turn around.
