New SNAP Rules: Some States Ban Junk Food and Soda Purchases

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which is commonly referred to as “food stamps,” is an important federal project in the United States that is aimed to alleviate food insecurity and hunger, particularly among households with low incomes.

An estimated 41 million people in the United States, or almost one in eight persons, received these benefits in the year 2024. Through participation in the program, members are given the opportunity to acquire a wide range of necessary foodstuffs, including cereals, fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy products.

In the beginning, this program did not have a great deal of restrictions on the kinds of foods that may be purchased. However, because every state has the authority to establish standards, a number of states have started to prohibit particular kinds of foods in order to guarantee that the advantages are utilized for healthy eating.

What products can be purchased with SNAP?

  • Fruits and vegetables.
  • Dairy.
  • Cereals.
  • Breads.
  • Meat, fish and poultry.
  • Healthy snacks
  • Plants and seeds (when used to grow produce for personal consumption).
