Cheerleader Dies After Bonfire Shooting; Man Shot 10 Times Protecting Her

PINSON, AL — A tragic shooting in Pinson, Alabama, has left a community grieving after high school cheerleader Kimber Mills, 18, was fatally shot during a bonfire gathering, while a man attempting to protect her survived after being shot multiple times. The incident occurred early Sunday morning in a wooded area locally known as “The Pit,” according to AL.com.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported that the suspect, 27-year-old Steven Tyler Whitehead, arrived at the gathering around 12:24 a.m. and fired multiple shots after a verbal and physical altercation. The confrontation reportedly stemmed from Whitehead attempting to approach Mills prior to the fight.

Victim and Hero: Kimber Mills and Silas McCay

Kimber Mills was a senior at Cleveland High School, where she excelled as a cheerleader and track athlete. She had plans to attend the University of Alabama in 2026 with aspirations of becoming a nurse.

Silas McCay, 21, who intervened during the altercation to protect his friends including Mills, was shot 10 times in multiple parts of his body, including the leg, hip, rib cage, stomach, finger, pelvis, and thigh. McCay told WBRC that he was acting instinctively to shield Mills.

“I look at her like a little sister to me. I tried everything I could. I wish there was more I could’ve done,” McCay said.

Despite his injuries, he visited Mills at the hospital on Sunday, recounting her holding his hand and telling him she loved him.

Details of the Shooting

According to McCay, the confrontation began when his ex-girlfriend warned him about Whitehead approaching Kimber Mills. McCay and a friend tried to stop Whitehead, with McCay physically restraining him. That’s when Whitehead allegedly drew a gun and opened fire.

“Our sweet baby sister went to be with the Lord at 7:08 p.m. last night! She has had the biggest gathering for an honor walk the doc has ever seen! She was and is so loved by so many,” Kimber’s sister Ashley Mills wrote on Facebook.

She described her sister as being “caught in the crossfire” and emphasized her bright personality.

Trussville Police Chief Eric Rush confirmed that Mills was shot in the head and leg before being transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Suspect and Charges

Whitehead has been charged with three counts of attempted murder and is being held on $180,000 bond. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which has left the community in shock.

Community Mourns a Bright Young Life

Friends and family of Kimber Mills remember her for her sunshine personality and infectious smile, rather than the tragedy that ended her life. Rylie Cirbo, a friend, told Fox News Digital, “I’d much rather her be known for her sunshine personality and big smile rather than the tragedy.”

An honor walk was held for Mills on Tuesday, and her family confirmed that she was on a DNR due to the severity of her injuries. Ashley Mills also noted that her sister was set up to be an organ donor in line with her wishes.

Heroism Amid Tragedy

McCay’s bravery during the incident highlights the courage of bystanders who step in to protect others at great personal risk. His recovery is ongoing, and he could leave the hospital as soon as Friday.

Communities are now reflecting on the importance of safety at public gatherings, awareness of surroundings, and intervention in dangerous situations. Kimber Mills’ death and McCay’s injuries serve as sobering reminders of the consequences of gun violence.
