Former Teacher Gets 187 Years for Abusing Teen Students, Living with One After 18

Mesa, AZ – An Arizona teacher, Cory Kapahulehua, has been sentenced to an extensive prison term of 187 years after being found guilty of sexually abusing two teenage students. The conviction follows a harrowing case of exploitation and abuse of trust that occurred while Kapahulehua taught at the Arizona Agribusiness and Equine Center.

The sentencing marks a significant moment in upholding justice for the victims and sends a strong message against abuse of power in educational settings.

Details of the Abuse and Legal Proceedings

Cory Kapahulehua, aged 44, was convicted on 17 counts including molestation of a child, sexual conduct with a minor, sexual abuse, aggravated assault, and attempted sexual conduct. These charges were related to inappropriate relationships he had with two students aged 14 and 17, which began in August 2021.

  • The younger student revealed that sexual encounters took place on school grounds until January 2022, continuing thereafter in other locations such as a nearby hotel and parking garage.
  • The older victim indicated that the abuse occurred at Kapahulehua’s apartment while she was still underage.

Following his dismissal from the school in January 2022, Kapahulehua continued to maintain contact with the victims, exploiting their vulnerability and trust.

The Manipulation and Grooming Tactics

Prosecutors explained how Kapahulehua leveraged his teaching position to groom the students. Shockingly, he organized an online fundraiser to enable the older victim to move out of her parents’ home before she reached legal adulthood.

“This defendant used his position as a teacher to groom these students and take advantage of their trust,” said Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell. “I’m proud of these girls for having the courage to come forward and stop him from victimizing any children ever again.”

Upon turning 18, the older student moved into Kapahulehua’s apartment, further illustrating the predatory nature of his actions.

Community Impact and Ongoing Awareness

This case highlights critical issues concerning the safeguarding of minors in educational environments. It has triggered discussions on:

  • The urgent need for stronger protective measures for students.
  • The importance of vigilance and support systems in schools.
  • Raising awareness about the signs of grooming and abuse.
