Commissioner in Miami Beach Gives Up Paycheck to Help Family of Fallen Cop

Miami Beach, Florida — A local city commissioner has announced that he will donate his entire salary to the family of a fallen Miami Beach police officer who tragically lost his life in a recent crash, leaving behind a grieving wife and three young children.

Commissioner David Suarez said he plans to reach out personally to the family of Officer David Cajuso, a 33-year-old veteran of the Miami Beach Police Department, once they’ve had time to mourn.

Honoring a Dedicated Officer

Officer David Cajuso had served with the Miami Beach Police Department for 10 years, earning respect across the force and in the community. According to a post shared by the department on Facebook, Cajuso was a motorman known for his courage and unwavering commitment to public service.

“You couldn’t find a better officer. He was really a cop’s cop,” Suarez said. “He leaves behind a widow and three very small children. I’m married. I have three small children, and I can’t imagine what my wife would do without me.”

Cajuso died earlier this week after being involved in a traffic crash along the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 near NW 138 Street, according to authorities.

Commissioner’s Act of Support

Commissioner Suarez, who earns roughly $70,000 annually including base pay and allowances, told Fox News Digital that every dollar of his city salary will go to support the officer’s family.

“We stick up for our law enforcement,” Suarez said. “I think it’s important that we support each other.”

He added that his gesture is meant to honor the sacrifices of officers and the families who stand behind them, often facing emotional and financial hardship when tragedy strikes.

Community Mourning a Hero

Residents and fellow officers described Cajuso as a dedicated professional who always greeted others with a warm smile and carried himself with utmost professionalism.

Nicole Parker, a former FBI special agent and Fox News contributor who resides in Miami Beach, recalled recent conversations with Cajuso about the importance of community support for law enforcement.

“He genuinely cared about protecting others and particularly the most vulnerable — children,” Parker said. “I was crushed to learn of his passing and even more heartbroken when I saw the photos of his beautiful family — a wife and three young children.”

She added that having lost a close friend in the line of duty herself, she understood how devastating the loss is for the surviving family.

“The impact it has on the children left behind is beyond words,” she said.

Remembering the Person Behind the Badge

Officer Cajuso’s colleagues and city leaders emphasized that behind every badge is a person — a parent, a spouse, and a community member who takes daily risks to protect others.

Suarez spoke candidly about how law enforcement officers are often misunderstood or unfairly criticized, yet they continue to serve with dedication.

“A lot of people forget that these officers have families — spouses, children,” Suarez said. “They’ve been vilified in the media in recent years, but they’re the ones keeping our communities safe.”

He stressed that his donation is not just a financial gesture but also a reminder of gratitude for officers who put their lives on the line every day.

Continuing Support for Law Enforcement Families

The Miami Beach community is rallying behind Cajuso’s family, with residents and local organizations expressing their condolences and pledging to provide continued support.

City officials say they plan to honor Officer Cajuso’s service in the coming weeks and ensure his family receives assistance from both the city and fellow officers.

Suarez said he hopes his decision will encourage other public officials to step up and show similar support.

“I wish more politicians really did stick up for law enforcement and support their families,” he said. “It’s a tough job, and their families serve right alongside them.”

Call to Action

Officer Cajuso’s passing is a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who protect and serve — and the families they leave behind.
