A couple from North Texas is recovering after a violent assault during a Dallas Cowboys game last month that took them to the hospital.
Lindsey and Wenceslao Gonzalez told KTVT-TV that the September 22 incident, which left Lindsey with many facial fractures and Wenceslao with damaged ligaments in his leg, flipped their lives upside down.
The parents and their daughter had just left AT&T Stadium in Arlington after seeing their first Cowboys game. According to KTVT, they noticed a man yelling at a young woman and attempted to intervene.
“She was sobbing, scared, and looked very similar to the age of my daughter,” Lindsey Gonzalez told KTVT.
The man assaulted Wenceslao Gonzalez in the face and then struck Lindsey Gonzalez as she attempted to separate them. According to KTVT, witnesses told police that the suspect kicked Lindsey Gonzalez in the face while she was asleep on the ground.
Rafael Antonio Ramirez, 32, was detained in connection to the incident. According to court documents, he is charged with two counts of assault inflicting bodily injury. On September 23, he was released from the Tarrant County Jail after posting bond.
“It’s good that you try to be a good Samaritan, but at the same time, what’s going to happen if I am going to be a good Samaritan?” Wenceslao Gonzalez informed KTVT.
The 39-year-old had surgery to mend torn ligaments in his leg, and neither he nor his wife have been able to work since the attack, KTVT said. Lindsey Gonzalez, 40, sustained serious facial injuries, including a broken jaw and fractures to her nose and around her left eye.
The pair expressed their hope that what occurred to them acted as a wake-up call for the young woman they stepped in to assist.
“If I saved her, then it was worth it,” Lindsey Gonzalez told KTVT. “If I save one person, or if I help one person or one woman or anybody by putting my story out there, then it’s worth it.”
