One person was detained in the shooting death of an elderly woman in Clovis, New Mexico

Clovis, New Mexico, police investigators used video evidence to identify a 36-year-old man as a suspect in the shooting death of his grandfather’s wife, according to police officials.

Dany Lucero was arrested early Thursday morning and charged with murder in the Wednesday deadly shooting of Virginia Montoya, 78, at her house on the 1300 block of Traver Street, according to a Clovis police news release.

Clovis patrol officers arrived at the home after an 80-year-old man called 911 and reported that his wife had been shot as she answered her front door.

Responding officers and emergency medical personnel discovered Montoya with a single gunshot wound to the chest. She was transported via ambulance to Plains Regional Medical Center, where she died.

Meanwhile, police from the 9th Judicial District’s Major Crimes Unit initiated an investigation. According to the release, they discovered video surveillance that led them to identify Lucero, Montoya’s husband’s grandson, as a suspect in the case.

Authorities discovered Lucero at his house in the 4100 block of Cottonwood Drive early Thursday morning.

He is being detained at the Curry County Adult Detention Center.
