A Gunshot Near TSU During Homecoming Weekend Killed One Person and Injured at Least Nine Others

A shooting near the Tennessee State University campus during homecoming weekend has left one person dead and at least nine others injured.

The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) reported an exchange of gunfire between two groups at 5:10 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, according to WKRN.

Jefferson Street had reopened approximately 20 minutes before the incident, according to a Nashville news station, and TSU’s homecoming crowd had started to drop out, but the parking lots remained full.

Private vehicles carried five people to the hospital, while medics evacuated five more, according to Nashville news station WTVF.

MNPD Public Information Officer Brooke Reese confirmed to WKRN that one of the victims died as a result of their injuries at a police briefing shortly before 7:15 p.m.

The police department later announced on the social networking platform X that the deceased victim was a 24-year-old guy.

Three of the casualties were juveniles and were not in critical condition. According to the post, MNPD officers claimed one of the suspects involved in the shooting was brought to the hospital.

WTVF reported that the Nashville Fire Department was in the area for outreach as part of the homecoming festivities.

NFD spokesperson Kendra Loney stated that the department was able to respond immediately to assist the shooting victims. According to WTVF, one NFD member was transferred due to a medical concern unrelated to gunshots.

According to MNPD Commander Anthony McClain, the incident is not a direct reflection on TSU and is considered “kind of a sidebar to the celebration.”

Police revealed more information about the victims during a 9 p.m. briefing, including the fact that a 55-year-old lady was in critical condition, according to WKRN.

A 44-year-old lady, a 31-year-old male, a 32-year-old guy, and a 23-year-old man were all hurt. Three juveniles were hurt, including a 12-year-old girl and two 14-year-old girls. WKRN stated that all victims, except the 24-year-old who died and the 55-year-old in critical condition, are expected to survive.

The Metro Nashville Police Department continues to investigate the shooting.
