A suspect has been detained in connection with the murder of Mercedes Vega, 22, who was discovered dead in a burning automobile on the side of an Arizona highway in April 2023.
Sencere Hayes, 22, was arrested in Tennessee on November 11 in connection with the killing of Vega, according to a Maricopa Sheriff’s Office official.
Hayes is accused of first-degree murder, “among other charges,” according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
The sheriff’s office stated that they are working with the attorney’s office to extradite Hayes to Arizona.
The sheriff’s office stated that they had been “working tirelessly” on the case, which is being investigated as a homicide.
According to Arizona ABC station KNXV, Vega’s autopsy revealed blunt force injuries and a gunshot wound to the arm, as well as bleach in her neck.
Vega’s relatives told KNXV that she was found in someone else’s automobile, while her car was recovered near her Tempe apartment.
Vega worked as an exotic dancer, according to her family.
According to her obituary, Vega was a superb singer and straight-A student who enjoyed swimming and playing the violin. Loved ones recalled her for having a “huge heart.”
“She continues to soothe and love from beyond this earth. Her spirit is strong and forceful. Her obituary reads: “She will be remembered by everyone who had the extraordinary opportunity to meet her.”
