Breaking: Michigan Hospital Shooting Leaves Community on Edge – Suspect Still at Large

Police in a northern Detroit suburb confirmed a shooting at a local hospital on Thursday, describing it as an isolated incident.

The Troy Police Department reported on social media that the shooting happened at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital and that the suspect had not been caught.

Police advised the public to avoid the area. A large number of officers were seen at the hospital, which includes several buildings.

Corewell Health posted on X that “one person is in the emergency department for medical treatment,” but did not provide further details.

Police have not confirmed if anyone was injured or killed. A police dispatcher said no additional information was available.

On Thursday morning, residents received an emergency alert on their phones, warning of an active shooter and advising them to stay away from the hospital and shelter in place.

WXYZ-TV interviewed a woman who was sheltering on the first floor of the hospital with other patients scheduled for mammograms.

Troy, a city of over 87,000 people, is located about 22 miles (35 kilometers) north of Detroit.

Last month in York, Pennsylvania, a man armed with a pistol and zip ties took staff in the ICU hostage before being killed by police in a shootout that also killed an officer.

The shooter, 49-year-old Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, had reportedly targeted the hospital after being in contact with the ICU earlier in the week regarding medical care for someone else, according to the York County district attorney.

Hospital violence is increasing, especially in emergency rooms, maternity wards, and ICUs, said hospital security consultant Dick Sem.

Unlike random mass shootings, hospital attacks are often targeted, with shooters sometimes acting out of anger over the care of a deceased relative, he added.
