UPLAND, Calif. — A California family experienced a terrifying ordeal when their baby girl suddenly began choking and went into cardiac arrest — but thanks to a fast-acting police officer and paramedics, the child survived.
Officer Responds Within Minutes
According to a statement shared by the Upland Police Department on social media, the emergency call came in around 2 p.m. local time, and an officer arrived within minutes. The department also released body camera footage showing the tense rescue as it unfolded.
When the officer reached the home, a distressed woman — carrying her unresponsive baby — ran toward him, shouting for help.
“Please, she won’t breathe,” the woman cried. “I’ve never dealt with this. Please, please, my baby.”
The officer immediately took the infant, laid her on the hood of his patrol vehicle, and began clearing her airway before starting CPR.
Baby Begins Breathing Again
Police said that as paramedics arrived, the baby began breathing again and was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Doctors later determined that the infant had choked and gone into cardiac arrest before being resuscitated by first responders.
“Our dispatchers and officers stand ready for any call that comes in and commend the family for being observant and calling 911 at the first sign of distress,” the Upland Police Department said in a statement.
