As Chicago prepares for its second consecutive NASCAR race in Grant Park, city and race officials have announced plans to significantly reduce major road closures compared to last year.
The NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series are scheduled for July 6-7. However, setup and breakdown of the race course will result in some road closures starting as early as June 10 and lasting until July 18.
This year, major road closures for setup and teardown will span 19 days, from June 26 to July 15, compared to 25 days last year, from June 18 to July 13.
This reduction was achieved by shifting equipment deliveries from Columbus Drive to Ida B. Wells, thereby minimizing disruption on the busy north-south corridor.
When the 2024 race schedule was announced last October, Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration and NASCAR emphasized their commitment to shorter road closures and increased cost coverage.
The race course layout remains unchanged from last year. Despite road closures, all businesses and homes near the race course will remain accessible.
Safety remains a top priority, with the Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) overseeing race activity coordination and city resource management.
