After a frantic pursuit through San Bernardino County late Monday evening, deputies shot a possibly armed and dangerous driver. They claim that the chase began when they attempted to pull the driver over but instead escaped.
At times, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officials stated that the motorist was traveling at triple-digit speeds.
Deputies said that they are familiar with the suspect but have not disclosed the crime that led to their current condition. They did indicate that the suspect had two firearms when the alleged crime took place.
While SBSD deputies chased the dark blue Infiniti down the street, the Ontario Police Department assisted with the chase from their helicopter.
Around 9:45 p.m., the suspect entered the northbound lanes of I-15, headed toward the Cajon Pass, where the chase began and officers believe the person lives.
As the chase continued into the high desert, deputies successfully performed a PIT maneuver on the suspect’s vehicle, bringing it to a quick halt.
Despite this, they refused to exit their vehicle and surrender, resulting in a minutes-long confrontation with cops before attempting to drive away.
The PIT maneuvered the suspect three more times as they attempted to flee, and the vehicle remained operational, continuing to drive away.
With five SBSD patrol cars following closely, they were able to successfully box the vehicle, colliding with both the suspects and each other’s vehicles, bringing the chase to a close.
Deputies opened fire at some point, and the subject was hit many times. Their status was unknown when a San Bernardino County Fire Department ambulance arrived to provide medical assistance.
One deputy was trapped inside their car when the pursuit came to an end.
Deputies closed both sides of I-15 during the investigation. It was unclear when the lanes would reopen. California Highway Patrol officers also came on the scene to assist with traffic control, but they stated that Caltrans had been called for a hard closure so that the investigation could proceed.
With SkyCal overhead, a major traffic jam could be observed forming on both sides of the road.
