Detroit Man Pleads Guilty but Mentally Ill After Killing Three People in Church Doorway and Bus Stop in 2022

RDL – The man who killed three people out of the blue in Detroit and left their bodies at a bus stop and in the doorway of a church pleaded guilty but was mentally ill on Wednesday. He will spend at least 30 years in jail because of the deal.

The killings took place in August 2022 on a Sunday morning. At the time, the police chief said the shooter had “talked our community into fear.”

Today, Dontae Smith, who is now 21, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, attempted murder, and other charges, but he said he was mentally ill. He had been charged with first-degree murder, which if found guilty would have meant life in prison.

“He is now stable.” “He is smart,” Maria Mannarino, the defense lawyer, said. “But he was having a paranoid schizophrenic episode at the time.” He believed the people he met on the street wanted to hurt him. Nothing but sadness and tragedy here.”

Mannarino said that Smith would be able to get out of jail after 30 years.

The shootings took place over two hours, but cops say no one called 911 until the second victim was found. Three people, two women, a man, and a dog were killed. Four other people were hurt.

Sources say Smith ran away after someone with a gun saw the last killing and shot at him.
