Duo Arrested Following High-Speed Police Chase in Edgewood Street Racing Incident

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – Two people are accused of leading numerous law enforcement agencies on a chase throughout the metro, all the way to Edgewood, after being captured street racing.

It all began early Saturday morning when a New Mexico State Police officer saw a Dodge Challenger driving westbound on I-40 near University. The officer recorded the driver doing 124 mph in a 65.

According to the criminal complaint, the driver, Jaymin Giro, 20, was swerving in and out of traffic and nearly collided with other drivers on the road. That’s when Albuquerque Police Air Support arrived and tracked the chase from above.

The police caught up with Giron near the Rio Grande and Central and asked him to stop, but he refused. According to the lawsuit, Giron turned off his headlights and ran several red lights before departing Albuquerque on I-40 eastbound.

Giron stopped in Edgewood after traveling more than 30 miles and attempted to fill up at a gas station. An officer tried again to stop him, but he sped away.

He didn’t get far before Santa Fe County deputies spiked the Challenger’s tires just east of the Wild Life West Nature Park on Interstate 40. Giron and his companion, 18-year-old Eva Fernandez Montoya, ran into the adjacent brush. Officers arrested both Giron and Montoya.

Giron told officers that he had “consumed some “Jose Cuervo tequila.” The citation said that Giron blew a.06. He is facing several accusations, including aggravated DWI and aggravated flight. The state has requested that he be detained in custody pending trial.

Montoya, the passenger, faces charges of resisting and eluding an officer.
