An Elmira man faces assault charges after allegedly attacking and critically injuring another person with a hammer on Wednesday evening.

Elmira police identified the suspect as 19-year-old Jacob S. Buckley.

Around 10:18 p.m. Wednesday, officers were summoned to a property on Magee Street on the city’s Northside for a disturbance in which one individual was allegedly struck in the head with a hammer, according to police.

Arriving authorities found the victim, who had multiple head wounds. According to authorities, the victim was taken to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police discovered that the suspect, who was not at the scene when they arrived, was related to the victim.

Officers searched the surrounding area and spotted Buckley in less than an hour, taking him to jail without incident.

Following the inquiry, police charged Buckley with first-degree assault, a Class B felony punishable by five to 25 years in jail, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.

Buckley pled not guilty to the charges during his arraignment on Thursday morning in the City of Elmira Court. He was booked into the Chemung County Jail instead of $40,000 cash bail.

The Elmira Police Department received assistance from the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, Elmira Fire Department, and Erway Ambulance.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information about the event is asked to call the Elmira Police Department at 607-737-5626 or leave a message on the anonymous tip line at 607-271-HALT.
