An Illinois mom and son were tragically stabbed to death in their home the day after they had celebrated Christmas.
Alejandro Cota, 50, has been charged with first-degree murder following the killings of Christina Chavira, 47 and Damien Chavira, 13. Police sadly believe their deaths may be a case of ‘domestic violence’ .
Officers were called to a property on the 2700 block of Emma’s Way, in Geneva, Illinois, at around 8pm on December 26. They found two victims who were later pronounced deceased after being taken to a nearby hospitals. The incident was isolated to the home, and Cota was taken into custody at the scene, Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office said.
A preliminary autopsy revealed that both victims died as a result of ‘multiple stab wounds’. Toxicology samples were also collected during the examination and sent to a forensic laboratory for further analysis.
Cota, who is believed to be a self-employed carpenter, was detained in the Kane County jail. His first court appearance was set for Saturday, December 28, before he was later transferred to Judge Julia Yetter. His next court date is set for January 9.
