A husband-and-wife team running A&M Fence Systems has been caught in a scam that tricked homeowners in both South Carolina and Georgia.
The business owners, Michael John and Sharon Wickham, are now facing legal charges for fraud.
Fake Fence Orders & Stolen Deposits
According to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, the scam started in October when a homeowner in Dalrymple, SC, hired A&M Fence Systems to install a backyard metal fence.
The homeowner paid a $4,500 deposit, but instead of ordering materials, the Wickhams cashed the check and created fake documents to make it seem like the parts had been purchased.
Investigators later discovered that no fence materials were ever ordered.
Georgia Homeowner Also Scammed
The fraudulent activity was not limited to South Carolina. In early 2024, the Wickhams managed to scam another homeowner in Georgia out of $5,000.
Like before, they took the deposit but never delivered the fencing materials.
Criminal Charges & Arrests
After a thorough investigation, authorities arrested Michael and Sharon Wickham. They were charged with Breach of Trust and Obtaining Goods Under False Pretenses in South Carolina.
Additionally, Michael Wickham is facing felony charges in Georgia for similar offenses. The couple has since posted bail.
Sheriff’s Office Issues Warning
To avoid confusion, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office clarified that A&M Fence Systems is not connected to Wickham Fence, another fencing company operating in the area.
Homeowners are urged to verify businesses before making deposits, especially for home improvement projects.
