Five Dead After Plane Crashes into Vehicle Near Falcon Field in Mesa

A small plane crashed on Greenfield Road near Falcon Field Airport in Mesa late Tuesday afternoon, killing five people.

At 4:40 p.m., the HA-420 HondaJet plane crashed into a car just outside the airport after taking off.

Donnell Evans, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said that five people were on board. The local government did not say if the travelers were among the people who died.

The street was blocked by emergency vehicles, and it looked like traffic near the airport would be stopped for hours. In the area, flames and smoke could be seen.

There was a plane crash in Mesa at Greenfield and McKellips Road, Mesa police said in a post on X. “The whole area is going to be closed off for a while.” Please find a different way to get there.”

In a post on X after 9 p.m., police said that some traffic was open in the area. They said that northbound Greenfield was open, but traffic had to go east at McKellips Road. Greenfield Road going south was still closed at McDowell Road. McKellips Road was open on both sides, but it was only one car wide.

People should still stay away from the area, according to the police.

The airport runways are set back from Greenfield Road by a small field. On the west side of Greenfield Road, there is a garden.

The company that made the plane calls it a “light business jet.” It can go as fast as 483 mph and has six seats. It can go 1,600 miles. Trade magazines in the industry say that the HA-420 jet, which was HondaJet’s first plane, took its first flight in 2003.

It’s 46.6 feet long, 14.9 feet tall, and its wings are 39.8 feet wide. It has two engines on the wings. It costs about $5.8 million to buy the plane brand new.

At Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, HondaJet has an official repair center. Of those, one HA-420 is for sale on its website. The house was built in 2017 and is being sold for $3.4 million.

Evans said that the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board were going to look into what happened.

The NTSB will be in charge of the case, and a spokeswoman for Mesa Fire and Medical, Marrisa Ramirez-Ramos, said that they would have new information on Wednesday.

“This afternoon, our community lost someone very sad,” Ramirez-Ramos said.
