Race Day Live The Florida Democratic Party (FDP) is holding a big meeting in Orlando to elect its new leadership team. This includes picking statewide officers, Democratic National Committee members, and leaders for congressional districts.
Nikki Fried, the current party chair, hopes to keep her position. She took over from Manny Diaz in 2023. Fried’s opponent is Audrey Gibson, a former state senator from the Jacksonville area.
A Tough Year for Florida Democrats
The 2024 elections were among the worst for Florida Democrats. Here’s why:
- Donald Trump beat Kamala Harris by a massive 13 points, the largest gap in a Florida presidential race in over 30 years.
- Senator Rick Scott easily won re-election over Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell by 13 points, even though his earlier races were much closer.
- Many counties that traditionally voted Democratic turned Republican.
- The Democrats failed to reduce the Republican supermajority in Florida’s legislature.
- Republicans now lead Democrats by over 1.1 million registered voters in the state.
Alan Clendenin, a Democratic National Committee member since 2008, has decided not to take sides in this race. “Nikki has done a good job given the circumstances,” Clendenin said, calling Audrey Gibson “a wonderful friend.”
The Vice-Chair Race
For the vice chair position, Jayden D’Onofrio, a 20-year-old leader of a youth-focused PAC, has dropped out.
Now, Daniel Henry, a 33-year-old leader from Duval County, is running. Former state senator Victor Torres might also compete, depending on nominations during the meeting.
Henry said Democrats need to connect better with voters. “We’ve struggled to explain how our policies improve people’s lives,” he explained during a radio interview.
He added that Democrats must reach voters through local efforts, not just broad, one-size-fits-all messages.

New Voting Rules
This is the first FDP election with new voting rules. The old weighted system is gone. Now, there are 400 voting members spread across Florida’s 67 counties, with at least two members per county.
The meeting starts at 10 a.m. at the Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace near Disney Springs. The session might last several hours, as the election process can take time.
Florida Democrats face a critical moment as they try to recover from their recent losses. Electing the right leaders could determine their future in a state where Republican influence continues to grow.
