Florida Weather Alert: Strong Storms and Flash Flood Risk for July 24 in Northern Florida

Heavy thunderstorms will hit the Tallahassee area on Thursday, July 24th, bringing heavy rain and a summer heat index close to 105°F. Drivers on US-319 and other roads in the area should be aware that conditions will change and that afternoon rains could cause water to build up.

The National Weather Service says that showers and thunderstorms will likely start after 2 p.m. on Thursday. Some cells of these storms could bring heavy rain and frequent lightning. Thunderstorms may keep going into the evening. As the front moves through, winds will change from southeast to south at 5 mph.

Local effects will happen right away. When it rains, roads like US-319, US-90, and I-10 near Tallahassee may become less visible and slippery. People in the city should expect delays and stay home when storms are coming through. Please charge your electronics now and prepare a flashlight, as short-term power outages are possible. Remember to drink water if you’re going to be outside—the heat index will get dangerously high, especially before the storms come.

The unsettled trend will continue on Friday with more thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. Friday night will bring drier, partly cloudy weather back. The heat will rise again on Saturday, when highs will reach 95°F and there is a 50% chance of rain. The chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening will last through the weekend and into next week. Temperatures will stay in the mid- to upper-90s.

Expect weather alerts until Saturday, with the most likely time for thunderstorms and heavy rain being in the afternoon. Keep an eye on reliable sources for news, and be ready to hide when warnings are sent out.
