Influenza A is spreading quickly through the Philadelphia region, causing concern among health experts.
Just last Friday, fans gathered in large crowds to celebrate the Eagles, even as flu season showed no signs of slowing down.
Rising Flu Cases in Philadelphia
Dr. David Manoff, the chief of pulmonary and critical care at Temple Jeanes Campus, warns that the region is at a critical point.
“We’re just at that cusp as we’re starting to see people get sick if they’re getting sick from it,” he said.
Being in large crowds, especially in enclosed spaces, can increase the risk of flu transmission. Manoff noted, “It wouldn’t surprise me if we’re seeing some sort of spike” after such gatherings.
Record-High Flu Rates Across the U.S.
According to CDC data, this flu season is seeing the highest rates recorded since the 1997-1998 season.
The Philadelphia area is experiencing “very high” flu rates, with hospitals seeing more flu cases than in recent years. This surge isn’t limited to Philadelphia—35 states across the U.S. are reporting similarly high rates.
Treating and Preventing the Flu
Despite the alarming numbers, flu is treatable. Dr. Manoff explained that Tamiflu can help reduce the duration of symptoms, although it’s not a complete cure.
Getting a flu shot is also recommended as it can lessen the severity of symptoms if you do get sick.
