Race Day Live A former West Virginia lawmaker convicted for taking part in the January 6 Capitol riot has been pardoned by Donald Trump.
Derrick Evans, who served in the West Virginia House of Delegates from 2016 to 2021, announced the news on Monday.
“I’m pardoned. Praise the Lord. We won,” Evans posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. He added, “My name is cleared. I have my rights back. I have my life back.”
Evans became widely known after livestreaming himself during the Capitol riot. He resigned from his role as a state delegate just days after the event and later admitted guilt to a felony charge of civil disorder. This led to him serving a three-month prison sentence. He was released in October 2022.
The pardon, part of a larger wave of clemency issued by Trump, also covered many others involved in the January 6 incident.
Evans had previously tried to return to politics by running for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives from West Virginia. However, he lost to Republican Carol Miller, who was the incumbent.
While Evans celebrated his pardon, the event continued to fuel debates about accountability and justice. Many people criticized the decision, viewing it as a step backward in holding those involved in the Capitol riot responsible.
Supporters of Evans, however, argued that the pardon gave him a fresh start. It has also sparked new discussions about whether others convicted on January 6 might also receive similar pardons in the future.
The former delegate’s journey from public office to prison and now to a presidential pardon shows how polarizing the fallout from the Capitol riot remains.

Despite his legal troubles, Evans expressed optimism about moving forward with his life. For now, his pardon represents both a personal victory and a flashpoint in the broader political conversation.
This latest chapter in Derrick Evans’ life highlights the ongoing complexities of justice, forgiveness, and political accountability in the U.S.
