PEMBERTON – Burlington County health officials confirmed the first case of H5N1, commonly known as bird flu, in a wild Canada goose found dead earlier this month in Pemberton.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection conducted testing as part of its ongoing avian influenza monitoring. Residents are now urged to take precautions, avoiding contact with sick or dead birds.
Though bird flu primarily affects poultry and wild birds, past cases have shown rare instances of transmission to humans. Officials stress that proper hygiene and safety measures will help prevent its spread.
New Gun Restriction Bills Advance in NJ Legislature
TRENTON – A series of gun control bills are moving forward in New Jersey’s legislature, aiming to tighten firearm regulations while addressing concerns about public safety.
At a judiciary committee meeting, Assemblywoman Ellen Park, D-Bergen, emphasized that the bills focus on firearm safety and accountability without infringing on Second Amendment rights.
“However, with every right comes responsibility. The Second Amendment does not give anyone the right to evade law enforcement or manufacture untraceable firearms,” Park said.
One of the more debated proposals requires law enforcement to seize ammunition and firearm components in cases involving domestic violence restraining orders or convictions.
Rob Nixon, a lobbyist for the Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs, called the bill excessive. “Firearms are already seized in such cases, and the ammunition is useless without the guns,” he argued.
The legislative push comes amid continued national discussions on gun control, with New Jersey maintaining some of the strictest gun laws in the country.
Federal Immigration Funding Bill Sparks Concerns in NJ
New Jersey’s immigrant communities are closely watching the proposed “No Bailouts for Sanctuary Cities Act,” reintroduced for the 119th Congress by U.S. Rep. Nick LaLota, R-New York.
If passed and signed by President Donald Trump, the bill would cut federal funding to jurisdictions with sanctuary policies, limiting financial support for food, shelter, healthcare, legal services, and transportation.
Amol Sinha, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Jersey, criticized the move.
“The Trump administration is using federal dollars to pressure states into doing immigration enforcement work. States should not be bullied into doing the federal government’s job,” Sinha said in an interview with New Jersey 101.5.
New Jersey, home to a large immigrant population, has several cities with sanctuary policies. The proposed legislation raises concerns about its impact on local communities and access to essential resources.
Atlantic City Named Best Boardwalk in America
A recent ranking of America’s best boardwalks has put New Jersey’s own Atlantic City Boardwalk at the top of the list.
The Atlantic City Boardwalk, established in 1870, is the first and oldest boardwalk in the country. Known for its casinos, attractions, and oceanfront views, it remains a favorite destination for both tourists and locals.
But is Atlantic City truly the best boardwalk in New Jersey? Some argue that other boardwalks, such as Wildwood or Ocean City, offer a more family-friendly experience.
