Harbor Masters Warn Boaters After Surge in Nighttime Collisions

This is the second incident of its kind to occur in Connecticut waters this month, and it occurred over the weekend when a boat collided with a break wall in Stamford Harbor. Four people were injured as a result of the collision.

According to the Stamford Deputy Harbor Master Frank Fumega, the collision took place at approximately 9:59 p.m. and occurred on Saturday.

During the night, Fumega remarked that it is very dark. Due to the fact that it was high tide on that particular night, you could only see approximately one foot and a half of the wall through the break wall. In most cases, when the tide is low, you can expect to have up to eight feet of break wall.

It is possible that the high tide played a role in reducing the severity of the crash, according to Fumega.

They are extremely fortunate. There was a consideration of speed. If they had been moving at a faster pace, the situation might have been even more dire. Because of the tide, they were unable to make a direct hit on that wall,” Fumega pointed out.

In the previous incident, which occurred two weeks earlier, a couple was killed when their boat collided with a break wall in New Haven Harbor while they were returning from a restaurant. This crash follows that fatal incident.

Officials in the boating industry have stated that the recent accidents highlight the dangers of navigating at night, particularly when doing so without paying adequate attention to navigational markers.
