Thousands of cans of baked beans have been recalled in 23 states due to the possible presence of undeclared soy, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Vietti Food Group of Nashville, Tennessee, issued the voluntary recall on Friday for 4,515 cases of Yellowstone Brown Sugar Molasses Baked Beans.
Vietta Food Group told Newsweek they had no additional information to share beyond the recall statement issued by the FDA.
Why It Matters
Soy is one of the nine major allergens, alongside eggs, milk, wheat, sesame, peanuts, tree nuts, crustacean shellfish and fish.
Two million Americans cannot eat soy, according to the food allergy website Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE).
“Individuals with an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product,” the FDA warned.
What To Know
The recalled baked beans were distributed through retailers in Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.
The affected product has a “best if used by date” of February 17, 2028. The date can be found on the bottom of each can.
As of Monday, no illnesses or adverse reactions had been reported related to the consumption of the baked beans.
Consumers who have bought the product are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
What People Are Saying
The FDA said on its website: “Food allergic reactions vary in severity from mild symptoms involving hives and lip swelling to severe, life-threatening symptoms, often called anaphylaxis, that may involve fatal respiratory problems and shock.
“While promising prevention and therapeutic strategies are being developed, food allergies currently cannot be cured. Early recognition and learning how to manage food allergies, including which foods to avoid, are important measures to prevent serious health consequences.”
It added: “To protect those with food allergies and other food hypersensitivities, the FDA enforces regulations requiring companies to list ingredients on packaged foods and beverages. For certain foods or substances that cause allergies or other hypersensitivity reactions, there are more specific labeling requirements.”
