Race Day Live , (Santa Fe, NM) – The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico revealed that Rogelio Rodriguez-Salas, 29, has received a sentence exceeding nine years in prison for his efforts to destroy an unmanned aerial system and for federal drug trafficking activities.
On July 3, 2023, law enforcement used a drone to track Rodriguez-Salas, a Mexican national who had been deported and was illegally in the U.S., while he was in possession of a stolen vehicle, according to court documents.
Rodriguez-Salas reportedly shot at a drone in a bid to avoid being monitored, according to the U.S. attorney’s office. The department confirmed that he was arrested following the incident but was later released.
On July 21, 2023, deputies from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department came across Rodriguez-Salas, according to the office’s statement.
A revolver was discovered in his possession as he participated in drug trafficking and drove a stolen vehicle, as reported by the U.S. attorney’s office.
Deputies from BCSD stated that Rodriguez-Salas had over four grams of fentanyl in his possession when they pulled him over, as per the U.S. attorney’s office.
On July 15, 2024, Rodriguez-Salas admitted guilt to multiple charges, which include efforts to damage, destroy, disable, and wreck an aircraft, being a prohibited individual in possession of a firearm, and re-entering the U.S., according to the department.
Rodriguez-Salas acknowledged having the intent to distribute four grams or more of fentanyl and possessing a firearm to support a drug trafficking operation, according to the department.
After finishing his prison term, the U.S. attorney’s office announced that Rodriguez-Salas will undergo three years of supervised release and will be subject to deportation proceedings.
