Illinois Bill to Adjust Indiana Border Fails to Pass – What Went Wrong?

The plan for parts of Illinois to join Indiana has hit a setback.

Illinois House Bill 1500, which was meant to support Indiana’s boundary adjustment commission bill, has failed because it missed Friday’s deadline to pass out of committee.

Indiana House Bill 1008, which proposes creating a commission to explore adjusting Indiana’s border with Illinois, passed the Indiana House in February.

House Speaker Todd Huston from Fishers says he is still pushing for the measure.

For the commission to move forward, Illinois needed to pass its companion bill. Illinois HB 1500, sponsored by Rep. Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville), was supposed to serve that purpose.

Halbrook said they are considering other options to keep the bill alive. These include requesting a deadline extension or adding the bill as an amendment to another active piece of legislation this session.

“I am evaluating the best way to keep up the momentum and advance our goals,” Halbrook said.

Meanwhile, Indiana HB 1008 is waiting for a hearing in the Indiana Senate.
