Illinois Ranks Fifth in the Nation for Migrant Population, Report Finds

The CIS report estimates that nearly eight million undocumented individuals reside in sanctuary jurisdictions, accounting for 56.3% of the nationwide total. California leads with around 3 million migrants, followed by other high-population states.

Former Illinois State Representative Dan Caulkins, R-Decatur, expressed concern about the implications of sanctuary policies.

“This is what happens when you make your city and state a sanctuary,” Caulkins told The Center Square. “It’s an open invitation, especially when you’re spending over a billion dollars to take care of them.”

Caulkins highlighted the strain on resources and argued for stricter enforcement against individuals with criminal records or those overstaying their visas.

Federal Enforcement Efforts

Incoming border czar Tom Homan has identified Illinois, particularly Chicago, as a key area for implementing deportation plans targeting foreign nationals with criminal records. Caulkins expressed support for these efforts, stating, “This is a great place to test their strategy. Who doesn’t want criminals removed from their neighborhoods?”

Political Implications

Caulkins also criticized Illinois Democrats for their stance on sanctuary policies. He suggested these policies are aimed at offsetting the state’s population decline. “Illinois has lost 30,000 residents annually over the past decade. Bringing in migrants keeps census numbers up, but at a billion-dollar cost to taxpayers,” he said.

Governor’s Stance

Governor J.B. Pritzker and other Democratic leaders have maintained their support for sanctuary policies but have expressed willingness to deport violent offenders. Pritzker has also vowed to challenge any overreach from the incoming Trump administration.
