The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office says that they need your help to solve a “vicious” murder that was so violent that a 911 caller thought it might have been a bear attack.
Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer says that Dustin Kjersem, 35, was found dead in a tent on Saturday morning, about 2.5 miles up Moose Creek Road, in a camping area in Montana that is pretty far away.
Kjersem wasn’t seen or heard from since October 10, when he was going to go camping for the weekend. He was going to meet a friend on Friday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said.
Kjersem’s friend went looking for him after he didn’t show up at the meeting spot and found him dead.
The sheriff’s office says that when police arrived at the scene of the crime, a Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks agent who specializes in bear attacks did not see any signs of bear activity. This led police to treat the event as a murder.
This was proven even more by the fact that an autopsy showed he died from multiple cuts.
Springer told reporters Wednesday that the murder weapon was something “hard enough to cause significant damage to the skull as well as some flesh areas of the body.” However, investigators still don’t know what it was.
Police are working hard to find and create leads in this case, which was a violent attack. As of now, a suspect has not been caught, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
No one has been arrested or charged with the murder, and the time of his death has not been established.
The gear Kjersem brought to the tent was “very well kept,” according to Springer.
Cellphone service is weak where the murder happened, which makes the case harder. Cellphones can usually be very helpful to investigators, Springer said.

People have already contacted the sheriff’s office and given them several tips that they will look into as the investigation into what happened goes on.
“Please come forward if you were in the Moose Creek area or anywhere else in Gallatin Canyon between Thursday afternoon and early Saturday morning and saw anything strange. This includes seeing Dustin or his truck, noticing suspicious activity, having footage from game cameras or in-car cameras from the area, or just noticing something that doesn’t seem right. “Any little thing could be very important to the investigation,” the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
