From behind bars, embattled Rochester Hills Dr. Oumair Aejaz was recently charged with another 17 felony counts, this time for allegedly videotaping himself assaulting a 6-year-old who officials believe is one of several victims of a larger and “horrific” case of sexual abuse.
The fresh accusations, revealed on Thursday, come two months after Aejaz was arrested for secretly recording five adults and children at Rochester’s Goldfish Swim School. Authorities suspect that he also utilized hidden cameras to record women and children in places such as hospital rooms and bedrooms, as well as himself sexually assaulting unconscious hospital patients.
Aejaz is currently in jail on a $2 million bond. His lawyer, Mariell Lehman, declined to comment late Thursday.
According to Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald, the doctor’s wife tipped off investigators about her husband’s alleged wrongdoing by producing evidence that sparked worry among authorities. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office promptly acquired a search warrant and seized the doctor’s computer devices, which McDonald earlier stated contained “really jarring, alarming images.”
Investigators have spent the last two months identifying persons who may have been victims, estimating that there could be hundreds of them.
The most recent charges are related to an alleged series of assaults on a 6-year-old child in Novi on six different days in 2023 and 2024. Prosecutors claim Aejaz sexually touched the youngster and videotaped himself doing so. The charges include two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, the most serious in this case, with a maximum punishment of life in prison if convicted and a mandatory minimum of 25 years. Aejaz is also charged with three counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct, three counts of aggravated child sexually abusive activities, three counts of photographing a naked person, and six counts of using a computer to commit a crime.
“We know that there are additional victims, and we ask anyone with information to contact the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office at [email protected],” Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said in a statement Thursday.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, Aejaz previously worked at Ascension Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc Township and Henry Ford Hospital Macomb in Clinton Township. He held privileges at those institutions but was not a staff member, according to the office.
“This individual potentially is one of the worst I’ve ever seen because there’s no particular category,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard previously stated. “It isn’t just children. It isn’t only ladies. It isn’t only men. It progresses from a two-year-old to an adult woman. As a result, the victimization is so widespread and the perversion so severe that we are only now beginning to understand it.”
According to Bouchard, detectives seized six computers, four smartphones, and 15 external hard drives, one of which included 13,000 videos. He said it could take up to six months to analyze all of the evidence, and that the suspected criminal activity dates back at least six years.
Aejaz, an Indian national, has been working in the United States on a visa since arriving about 2011, according to Bouchard. He finished his residency at DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital and spent some time in Alabama.
“Due to the lengthy time that he’s been involved in this activity and the large amounts of storage that we have in our possession, we believe there’s obviously a lot more to be uncovered,” previously stated Bouchard.
