San Diego, CA – Surge in flu cases reported across Southern California

A significant number of residents in Southern California are sadly welcoming the new year while battling coughs, sneezes, and fevers.

Recent weekly tracking data from the California Department of Public Health indicates a significant increase in influenza cases in the region.

Flu activity levels are mostly at a “moderate” rate throughout the state, yet Southern California is experiencing a notably higher incidence of positive cases.

The department emphasized the importance of getting vaccinated against the flu to safeguard your health, prevent serious complications, and alleviate pressure on healthcare resources.

Common signs of the flu are experiencing a fever or chills, having a cough, a sore throat, a runny or congested nose, muscle or body pains, headaches, and feeling tired. Individuals might also encounter difficulty breathing, a sensation of warmth and flushing in the skin, along with red, watery eyes and discomfort in the eyes.

During the week of December 24-30, California reported a flu rate of 16.8%, as stated by the CDPH, which is notably higher than the national average of 12%.

To safeguard against the flu, specialists advise maintaining proper hygiene by regularly washing your hands with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds or utilizing an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. In addition, steer clear of close interactions with those who are unwell, use a tissue or your elbow to cover coughs and sneezes, and make it a habit to clean and disinfect surfaces that are touched often.
