A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for Door County because of the dangerous swimming conditions along Lake Michigan. These conditions are expected to last until Thursday at 4 a.m.
The National Weather Service in Green Bay says that strong currents and waves in eastern Door County are very dangerous for surfers and anyone else who is close to the water. Popular places like Rock Island State Beach, Baileys Harbor, and Whitefish Dunes Beach are on the warning list.
Strong waves and unsteady currents close to shore can quickly make swimming impossible, even in shallow water. The government warns that the waves could also carry people off of rocks or bridges.
People who want to go on trips late at night or early in the morning should stay out of the water and not walk near edges that could be hit by waves. Life-threatening conditions may last for a short time after the warning ends, as the waves die down.
Things should get better after sunrise on Thursday, but wind-driven waves may come back later this week if the flow onshore gets stronger.
