Lineman from Tennessee Tragically Dies After Drunk Driving Accident

A lineman from Tennessee has died after being hit by a suspected drunk driver, according to authorities.

The incident happened on March 16 at the intersection of Ashland Highway and Mount Olive Circle after a tornado outbreak in Alabama.

Thomas Dewayne Ferrell had traveled to Alabama to help repair power lines damaged by the tornado in Talladega County. He was working for Artis Power.

Talladega Police say Ferrell was wearing a bright green safety jacket and walking across Ashland Highway when he was struck by 45-year-old Miguel Manzana-Martinez.

Witnesses reported that Martinez was driving recklessly and passing cars before the accident. Investigators confirmed that he was under the influence at the time.

Neighbors expressed sadness over Ferrell’s death, noting that he had come to help the community after the storm.

Jessica Freeman said she heard the crash and described it as sounding like a gunshot.

“It was really loud. People need to slow down, be respectful, and remember that there are kids on this road,” Freeman said.

Connie Friebert also expressed her gratitude for Ferrell’s efforts. “I’m thankful he came to help keep the power on for us. I’m very sorry for his family,” she said.

The Talladega County Coroner confirmed that Ferrell died on Tuesday, March 25, at UAB Hospital.
