Race Day Live (St. Charles Parish, LA) – Two residents of Destrehan are facing multiple charges after being accused of abusing several dogs at their home on Murray Hill Drive.
The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office and local animal control responded to reports of animal cruelty at 214 Murray Hill Drive, where they encountered Doug Russell, 49, and Melissa LeBlanc, 48.
According to deputies, Russell allegedly used a machete to discipline a dog that had attacked another pet the previous night. Authorities said Russell failed to provide medical assistance to the injured animal after the incident.
Upon entering the residence, deputies and animal control officers discovered multiple emaciated and injured dogs living in poor conditions throughout the home. The animals were immediately removed and transported to a nearby shelter for medical treatment.
Investigators believe the machete used in the alleged abuse was found in the front yard of the property.
Russell faces the following charges:
- Seven counts of simple animal cruelty.
- Two counts of aggravated animal cruelty.
- Seven counts of failure to provide rabies vaccinations.
LeBlanc has been charged with:
- Seven counts of simple animal cruelty.
- Seven counts of failure to provide rabies vaccinations.
The rescued dogs are now receiving medical care and are under the supervision of the animal shelter. Authorities continue to investigate the case and have urged residents to report any signs of animal abuse in their communities.
