Major Loophole in Alabama Police Impersonation Laws Finally Closed

A new law in Alabama will take effect this fall, making it illegal for unqualified individuals to serve as police officers.

Governor Kay Ivey signed SB 115 on Friday, which strengthens the current law that bans impersonating a police officer.

Under the new law, it will be illegal for someone to knowingly accept a police officer position without having the required certifications or training.

It will also be against the law to hire someone as a police officer if they are known to be unqualified.

“Protecting the integrity of law enforcement just makes sense,” Gov. Ivey said in a statement.

“Strengthening this law helps ensure that Alabamians can trust that the men and women enforcing our laws are fully qualified and properly trained.

This not only builds public trust but also helps protect officers and enables them to perform their duties more effectively.”

In Alabama, impersonating a police officer is classified as a Class C felony, which carries a prison sentence of one to 10 years and fines of up to $15,000.

The new law will take effect on October 1, 2025.
