Four federal offices in Idaho may close as part of former President Donald Trump’s effort to reduce the federal government’s real estate holdings.
The General Services Administration (GSA), which manages federal properties, and Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, have notified landlords that hundreds of federal office leases will be terminated in the coming months, according to the Associated Press.
Among the canceled leases is a 44,623-square-foot office in West Boise near Interstate 84, currently occupied by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).
APHIS, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), is responsible for agricultural health, regulating genetically engineered organisms, managing wildlife damage, and overseeing the Animal Welfare Act.
A USDA spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment about the lease cancellation.
According to an internal GSA document obtained by the Associated Press, the APHIS lease at 9134 W. Black Eagle Drive is set to end on June 30.
The document, dated March 10, outlines when most lease terminations are expected, though not all offices will necessarily close by those dates.
Agencies would need to negotiate new leases or relocate if they wish to remain open.
Other Idaho leases affected include a 5,179-square-foot Federal Highway Administration office at 3050 N. Lakeharbor Lane No. 126 in Northwest Boise, expected to end on August 31. A 13,681-square-foot office occupied by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Idaho Falls is also scheduled to be canceled on the same date.
Additionally, the Bureau of Indian Affairs office in Lapwai, located south of Moscow in North Idaho, is set to lose its lease on September 30.
Public affairs representatives for the agencies did not respond to requests for comment.
