Man Charged After Crash in Winston-Salem Kills Woman’s Unborn Child

Winston-Salem, NC – A man has been charged in connection with a car crash last month that resulted in the death of a
woman’s unborn child, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.

The incident occurred on June 16 in the 2400 block of North Patterson Avenue. Police say 30-year-old Dequante Johnson was driving a 2021 Toyota Camry northbound when he lost control of the vehicle. The Camry struck a legally parked and unoccupied 2012 Dodge Ram, pushing it into another parked and unoccupied vehicle — a 1999 Ford truck.

A pregnant woman, who was a passenger in one of the vehicles, was injured in the crash and transported to the hospital. Tragically, due to the injuries sustained, her unborn baby did not survive.

Investigators determined that speed and reckless driving were contributing factors in the collision.

Johnson has been charged with involuntary manslaughter of an unborn child, speeding, reckless driving, driving while license revoked, and failure to maintain lane control.

He was arrested on Wednesday and given a $150,000 secured bond. In addition, Johnson was served with an outstanding parole violation related to the case and is currently being held without bond on that charge.

The investigation remains ongoing.
