Authorities say they have caught a convicted murderer who escaped prison in North Carolina and ran more than 100 miles away. This ends a three-day manhunt that involved both local and federal police.
A news release from the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction said that Ramone Alston, 30, was arrested without any problems just before 2 a.m. on Friday, August 16, at a hotel in Kannapolis, N.C., which is a suburb of Charlotte. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, FBI SWAT agents from Charlotte, and Kannapolis Police all took part in the probe.
According to the police, after Alston was caught, a female friend named Jacobia Crisp was arrested in Alamance County and charged with illegally aiding and abetting a fugitive. It’s not clear if she has made a plea or hired a lawyer to speak for her.
The agency says Alston will be charged with felony escape from state jail. He is being taken to a “high-security unit” in the state prison system right now. They said he would stay there to finish his life term for first-degree murder and wait for his court dates on the escape charges.
Alston got away from police on Tuesday, August 13, around 7 a.m., right after going to a meeting at UNC Hospitals Hillsborough Campus. The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction said in a separate report that he “jumped out of his handcuffs while still being restrained by the legs” and ran into the nearby woods.
The hospital is about 110 miles from Kannapolis, North Carolina, which is where Alston was finally caught. The agency had already said that there would be a combined $50,000 reward for information that led to his arrest and location.
A child, one-year-old, was shot and killed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 2015. Alston was found guilty of first-degree murder and is now serving a life term at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor, North Carolina.
Maleah Williams was shot in the head outside of her godparents’ house on Christmas Day 2015, according to WTVD. She later died at a nearby hospital. Tylena Williams, the girl’s mother, told the station that Maleah was playing outside with other kids when a man in a car started shooting.
The news source said that Alston and another man named Pierre Je Bron Moore admitted to killing the guy in 2019. According to WTVD, Alston was given a life term and Moore was given 28 to 34 years.
“I am grateful to our DAC staff and thankful for the support and effort from hundreds of local, state, and federal public safety officers who helped in the search and investigation that returned Alston safely to custody,” Todd Ishee said in the release. “This was an incredible collaborative effort of many people and agencies.”
