Race Day Live Democratic Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed her position on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests, stating her support for detaining criminals while rejecting any unlawful actions targeting innocent individuals.
Healey clarified that recent ICE activities in Massachusetts were not large-scale raids but targeted operations aimed at apprehending criminals.
“I wouldn’t describe them as raids,” Healey said. “What it seems to be is what we expected and what I support, which is the apprehension of criminals in our communities.”
These comments followed reports of ICE agents conducting arrests in Boston and Chelsea, Massachusetts, over the week.
Healey emphasized that Massachusetts is not a “sanctuary state” and that law enforcement officials in the state comply with the law.
A 2017 ruling by the state’s Supreme Judicial Court prevents police from detaining individuals solely based on immigration violations.
Healey, who supported this decision when serving as the state’s attorney general, reaffirmed her stance on lawful enforcement.
Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell echoed the governor’s sentiments, stressing the importance of ensuring all arrests are lawful.
“Yes, there is concern that there is the possibility they will round up people unlawfully, and that’s where we will hold them accountable,” Campbell stated.
