Mesquite Driver Charged with Manslaughter After Fatal I-20 Crash Kills 4 on New Year’s Day

Mesquite, TX – According to the police, an intoxicated motorist caused a collision in Mesquite, which resulted in the deaths of four people and injuries to three more.

An accident that occurred early on New Year’s Day resulted in the deaths of four persons and injuries to three more. The accident caused a part of Interstate 20 to be closed for several hours.

At approximately 1:45 in the morning on Wednesday, the collision took place in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 20 at FM 740.

According to the police, the victims were attempting to replace a flat tire while they were on the outside shoulder lane of the highway when they were struck by a drunk driver who was traveling at a high rate of speed.

According to the Mesquite Police Department, the individuals who were killed in the collision were Arturo Martinez Gonzalez, who was 47 years old; Anthony Hernandez, who was 19 years old; Mario Guajardo De La Paz, who was 19 years old; and a guy who was 15 years old.

The Terrell resident Basilio Mares Ortiz, who is 35 years old, has been taken into custody and accused with manslaughter by intoxication, according to the police.

During the time that the inquiry was ongoing, the eastbound lanes of Interstate 20 were closed until approximately ten in the morning.

Police in Mesquite have stated that the inquiry is still ongoing.
